Introducing identity cards
Identity cards are now available to British citizens who live or work in North West England and to 16 to 24 year olds living in London.
They offer a convenient way to help prove your identity in everyday situations and, because they lock you as an individual to one identity through use of details like your name, address and fingerprints, they’re also highly secure. Identity cards cost £30 and, like a passport, they are valid for 10 years.

Why get an identity card?
- It is the safest, most convenient way to help you prove your identity
- It proves your age without revealing private information like your address
- You can use it like a passport for travel anywhere in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland
- It offers the high level of security to help protect you against identity fraud
To be eligible for a card you must:
- Be a British citizen; and
- Be aged 16 or over, reside in the UK, hold a UK passport that was valid on or after 1st January 2009; and
- Live or work in North West England or
- Be aged 16-24 and live in Greater London
Or:
- Be aged 16 or over, work airside at Manchester Airport or London City Airport; and
- Be a British citizen or EEA/Swiss national

Register for updates
You can register for identity card updates here; this will allow you to apply for an identity card, as long as you are 16, a British citizen, reside in the UK and have a UK passport which was valid on or after 1st January 2009.
If you're not eligible now, registering will ensure you're kept up to date with any changes.
